The Europa Pass Gateway was built about 1811 and was part of the defence line running from Buena Vista, across the road and then up to the Carnot wall and base of Windmill Hill. There was a walkway and loopholes the length of this wall.
1st Europa Pass battery was located on the Buena Vista plateau, to the south of the Barrack block. The location of the battery can still be seen. 2nd Europa Pass was located on a ridge on the opposite side of the road. This Battery was linked to Windmill Hill by a spiral staircase in a limestone tower which still stands. 2nd Europa Battery had a block of military quarters built over it.
