Listing Type : Coastal Battery
Location : Gibraltar

This was originally designated as ‘N’ Battery on Windmill Hill, with an additional 20 batteries on the Windmill Hill plateau in 1859.

Between 1874 and 1877 this was upgraded to a 6-inch BL gun although it is not certain this gun was installed.  Some sources indicate that there was a 9-inch RML at this location.

By 1893 there was a 9.2-inch Mark VI BL gun on a barbette Mark I  mounted here.  In 1907 there was an upgrade to a 9.2-inch Mark X gun on a Mark V mounting.  This gun remained on site until scrapped in 1950.

The separate magazine is a structure built in the  19th Century, possibly about 1855 when the guns were placed around Windmill Hill as a result of the Jones Report. This magazine is not shown on maps of 1823 or 1840.  It is shown on the plan dated 1855 showing Windmill Hill guns positions but is not labelled. 1865 maps clearly show the magazine, again without any label.

The other 9.2-inch Batteries in Gibraltar are:
