The Fortifications of Duncannon centred on Duncannon Fort which dates back to 1551 when initial plans were drawn up. The threat of later Spanish invasion led to the Fort being built from 1587 onwards. Duncannon Fort has a land front, similar to one side of a star fort, with bastions. There ware two lunettes in the dry moat which function as caponiers. There are two sea batteries covering the anchorage.
Duncannon Fort was supported by two Martello Towers built within site of the land front, to further protect the land approaches. These two Martello Towers, Duncannon North and Duncannon South both survive. A further Martello Tower was built
