St Anthony’s Battery was built between 1895 and 1897.  It was initially armed with two 6-inch BL Mark VI guns on H.P. mounts with an underground magazine between the two emplacements.  The site was surrounded by a dry moat with unclaimable fence.  There were two Defence Electric Lights built on the shore below the battery and adjacent to the lighthouse.

The Battery was rearmed with 6-inch BL Mark VII gun in September 1904/5.  Thereafter it also served as the Port War Signal Station.

The battery remained in use until 1952. During World War 2, some four 3-pdr Q.F. guns were mounted at this location as AMTB defence.
