The Falklands was acquired by the British and became a Crown Colony in 1840, after intermittent occupation by the French, Spanish, and Argentinians. It was to develop into a Coaling Station but had only minimal defences.
In 1881 two projects were proposed for Port Stanley Harbour in the Falklands.
1st Project to deny the Harbour to an enemy, phase one proposed
- Navy Point Battery with 5 x 10-inch RML and 4 x 64-pdrs
- The Lines with 3 x 64-pdrs
2nd Project to protect the Harbour from Bombardment, phase two proposed
- Navy Point Battery with 2 x 10-inch RML and 3 x 64-pdrs
- The Lines with 3 x 64-pdrs
- York Point Battery with 6 x 10-inch RML and 3 x 64-pdrs
- Ordnance Point Battery with 2 x 10-inch RML and 2 x 64-pdrs
- East Battery with 3 x 10-inch RML and 2 x 64-pdrs
- Horse Point Battery with 3 x 10-inch RML and 2 x 64-pdrs
- Sapper Hill Fort with 4 x 64-pdr
- Blanco Hill Fort with 3 x 64-pdr
There was also a proposal to have a submarine minefield.
It is not believed that any of these planned defences were ever built.
