Signal Hill 12-pdr Q.F. is not mentioned by Rollo is his draft book, but plans held in the National Archives in UK do show this battery lying to the South of the 6-inch BL gun emplacements. We have not been able to find any original records in respect of this 12-pdr Quick Fire battery apart from the plan contained in WO 78.2739 dated 19-4 and relates to the building of a new signal station. The simple plan shows two barbette emplacements on the East edge of the escarpment to cover the bay below. It is assumed that this battery was built about 1895, before the new harbour was completed and probably fell into to disuse about 1907 when batteries were established on the various moles in the harbour.
The location of this battery has been largely obscured by new concrete structures built during World War 2. The Northern gun emplacement, B gun) appears to have been roofed over with a light anti-aircraft machine gun mounted on the roof. The actual gun emplacement can still be seen. The A gun emplacement appears to have been completely built over and lost.
