Mill Mount Martello Tower was built by 1808 which makes this one of the land Martello Towers built in the Dublin area. The Martello Tower was built on an earth mound, possibly an old castle motte and baily.
By the 1850s the site was primarily being used for accommodation, with barracks below the Martello Tower.
In 1922 the site was damaged by British 18-pdr artillery fire in support of the Irish Free State forces. It has now been restored.
