Dalkey Martello Tower was built in 1804 on the North end of Dalkey Island. It was also known as Tower No.9 South. On the Southern end of Dalkey Island, some 180 metres from the Martello Tower a coastal battery was built in 1805. This Dalkey Battery mounted three 24-pdr Smoothbore guns in barbette positions. The small battery was protected by a wall with loopholes for local defence.

The Battery, completed in 1805, was developed in subsequent years. The initial building including the outer walls, barracks, and gun emplacements. A small magazine was later added and between 1843 and 1852 toilets and a new magazine were added. The site was decommissioned in 1886.
