Some twenty seven Martello Towers were built on the coastline in the greater Dublin area between 1803 and 1808. Fourteen Martello Towers were built South of Dublin and thirteen to the North. In addition to the Martello Towers some seven batteries were built, some on adjacent sites. Some twenty two of the Martello Towers still stand. As was standard practice, the Martello Towers were of three levels. The roof level had the 24-pdr smooth bore gun on a traversing carriage. The next level down was the barrack accommodation. The basement, sometime partially underground, was the stores and magazine.

NORTHERN MARTELLO
The Dublin Martello Towers are often numbered from Dublin Bay. Thus we have North 1, Sutton Tower to Balbriggan Martello, North 12, some 25 Kilometres from Central Dublin.
The further Martello built is not often numbered. This is Mill Mount Martello Tower, some 40 Kilometres North of Dublin. This was the last Martello built on this streach of coastline.
