The Ordnance Depot at Dover Harbour has all but disappeared under new development, primarily a car park. Maps and images who that the Depot original included a number of stores with a quay that included a 50 ton crane. Fortunately this crane has survived and has recently been restored. The listed Fairbairn Engineering Company Ltd crane is dated from 1868 and used to be employed in the movement of guns and ammunition to and from vessels in the Wellington Dock. The crane was operated by four operators, unlike later models which were steam powered.
There is a steam powered Fairbairn crane at Bristol Harbour (35 ton). It is also believed that HMS Tamar in Hong Kong originally had one of the cranes, 50 ton, which was also probably steam operated.
