North Sector Magazine, Orangea

The North Sector Magazine, Orangea serviced the Coastal Defence batteries on the north shoreline such as Battery du Glacis and Battery du Phare.  It also held reserve ammunition for all the military on the Orangea Peninsular.  Built in 1898 it is accessed through a 60 metre tunnel and has a hoist from the magazine up to the surface.   Originally there was a steel staircase leading up from the magazine to the surface, and this also functioned as an escape route if the access tunnel became blocked.  To control the damp and enhance ventilation, the magazine has a brick wall separating it from the rock, similar to most British magazines,
