The Crockness Martello Tower was recommended to be built in July 1813 by Major Jams Carmichael Smith of the Royal Engineers to protect convoys assembling in Long Hope Sound. It was a twin to the Harckness Martello Tower and Battery in South Walls.
Construction of the Crockness Martello Tower commenced in 1814 and was completed by August 1815.
The Crockness Martello Tower is ten metres high and some 47 metres in circumference. The sea facing walls are thicker, and the entrance doorway is some four metres above the ground. The first floor was the usual barracks, and the basement store and magazine. The single 24-pdr was mounted on the roof on a traversing platform. In 1866 the 24-pdr gun was upgraded to a 68-pounder similar to the Hackness Martello Tower.
The tower was still in military hand in the 1880s but there was no garrison, just two artillery men based at Hackness Battery keeping an eye on the sites.
