Ringaskiddy Martello Tower was built between 1811 and 1813 to help protect Cork Harbour during heightened tensions with the USA. The five Martello towers at Cork were recommended by the report prepared by Brigadier General Mann and Lieutenant Colonel Robert D’Arcy in 1806.
This was one of the large towers with two 24-pdr SB guns mounted on the roof. The Ringaskiddy Martello was built with a dry moat around in and access was over a drawbridge, the tower having been sunk into the ground to protect the lower walls.
Ringaskiddy Martello Tower now lies empty and secured.
