Kinsale Harbour was used by the British as a naval and operational base. The original coast fortification built was James’ Fort, also know as the Old Fort was built about 1607. The James’ Fort was a star fort with stone keep, but an extension was built with a blockhouse on the shore line. James’ Fort Blockhouse (Water Battery) was a stone structure, built about 1604 on the shoreline, and linked to James Fort by a covered way. In 1682 defences of the Castlepark Peninsula were enhanced with the building of the substantial Charles Fort.
