South Battery

South Battery is located on the Upper Terrace of Fort Carlisle and is the most southerly of the battery.  Built about 1900 it was not part of the early 1860s modifications to Forts Camden and Carlisle.  South Battery had previously been a practice battery with two 64-pdr RML guns, then called South Parade.  The new 9.2-inch battery was built about 1900, the same time as the new North Battery at Fort Carlisle.  The Battery has positions for two 9.2-inch Mark X guns on Mark V mounts.  The layout follows the traditional one for British batteries of that time, two separate pits with an underground magazine, Royal Artillery Store and Lamp Room between.  There is also the usual crew shelter.
