Rupert’s Tower is shown in plans from 1684 show a redoubt and tower built in the approximate location of the current Rupert’s Tower Battery and South Battery at Fort Carlisle. At this time there was a mortar battery around the tower.
The actual name of Fort Carlisle did not appear until about 1841, and was in honour of Fredrick Howard the 5th Early of Carlisle.
In the 1860 Rupert’s Tower Battery was built to house two heavy 12-inch RML guns. It is estimated that construction was completed about 1870.
The battery was upgraded in about 1900 to mount two 6-inch Mark VII BL guns in barbette mounts. A Battery Command Post was built to the rear of the gun emplacements, and the magazine was underground between the two guns.
