The Pier & Gateway situated on the water line has a large gateway with a date of 1707 over it. This gateway gave access to the lower defences that were built on a terrace above the sea cliffs. In about 1700 this included carronades and 12-pdr guns strung along the terrace. This provided an ideal location to land both guns and munitions for the lower batteries, rather than trying to man handle them down the steep slope from Upper Fort Carlisle.
