The Dry Moat & Defences at Fort Carlisle principally covers the land approaches, cutting off the headland from the rest of the mainland. There are however two other shorter stretches of dry moat, one in the North curling down to near the pier and the other at the North end which culminated close to Battery Number 4.
There are three single storey caponiers along the length of the land front ditch to provide flanking fire. These are designated North, Central and South Caponiers. The caponiers have musketry loopholes only and do not appear to have had any artillery.
