Listing Type : Coast Defence Battery
Location : Ireland

Left Upper Battery (North Upper Battery) was initially armed in 1873 with three 7-inch RML gun in barbette emplacements with traversing carriages.  (TNA WO 78/4317).  By 1887 the battery had been converted to three 7-inch RBL guns, the 7-inch RML guns apparently having been withdrawn.

In 1896 the battery was upgraded to two 6-inch BL on Q.F. mountings (TNA WO 78/4887).   The two guns were placed on the two outside 7-inch emplacements and the two emplacements in the middle were converted to a shell and cartridge store.  There was one magazine to serve each gun.

The battery survives in reasonable condition in the configuration for a 6-inch BL battery.
