Left Lower Battery was built to mount three 7-inch RML guns mounted on Moncrief Disappearing Mounts. The Battery was built by 1870, but by that only to of the 7-inch, 7 ton, guns had been installed. By 1893 the third 7-inch RML gun and mount had been installed.
In 1897 the whole battery was converted to 12-pdr Mark 1 battery with three guns. The old gun pits had been filled in so that the 12-pdr gun could get a good field of fire. All this work was completed by 1903, possibly much earlier.
The whole battery survives in reasonable condition.
