Location : Scotland

The Clyde Torpedo Factory was built between 1910 and 1912 and would employ some 700 workers.  Other locations for torpedo testing and manufacture included Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour.  The Royal Navy Torpedo Factory (RNTF) Greenock manufactured Royal Gun Factory (RGF) Mark VII and Whitehead Weymouth Mark 1.  From 1913 the RNTF Mark VIII torpedo was manufactured at the Greenock works.

The site continued to be used until 1969, the last project being Project Chevaline, which concerned the defence of Britain’s Polaris missiles.  With the closure, all work was shifted to Weymouth.

Some of the original RNTF Greenock building survive and site is now a light industrial estate.
