De Waal Battery on Robben Island is composed of three 9.2-inch BL guns dispersed over a 500 metre frontage. The C or Number 3 gun has been restored and is arguably the last operation 9.2-inch gun in the World.
The 9.2-inch guns was manufactured about 1901 but the battery was built in November 1940 and is therefore out of period.
De Waal Battery is very similar to Scala Battery in Simon’s Town and Apostle Battery in Hout Bay. It was also built at the same time as the 9.2-inch battery on Rottnest Island in Australia.
