The Prospect Position was a land defence line built one to two miles to the East of the City of Hamilton. This defence line was intended to prevent hostile forces occupying Spanish Point, about two miles to the West of Hamilton. The fear was that hostile forces, landing elsewhere on the Island, could advance overland and then occupy Spanish Point. Here they could establish artillery batteries that could bombard the Royal Naval Dockyard which was just under two miles (Three Kilometres) across the Bay.
