Fort George is built on Mount Hill (Riche’s Mount) that overlooks the West side of St George’s Harbour. The current Fort George was built on the site of an earlier 17th Century battery.

The main central keep is a gun tower surrounded by a deep dry trench. The tower initially mounted four 24-pdr guns on the roof. A drawbridge connected the tower to the surrounding parapet which had four gun emplacements. Initially four 64-pdr RML guns were mounted here, but two of these would later be replaced by 11-inch RML guns.
The keep was used as a signal station, and because of its’ broad views over St Georges Harbour, it is still used as a communication centre.
