Cloonaghlin Martello Tower was Number 3 Tower on Bere Island and survives. The tower was built between 1804 and 1805 and when completed had a garrison of twenty six soldiers, including an NCO. A single 24-pdr SB gun was mounted on the roof. The tower was built with a dry moat around it for local defence and a machicolation covering the main entrance. Cloonaghlin Martello Tower was overlooked by Ardagh Tower, Tower Number 4.
