Ardagh Martello Tower was completed in 1805 as a defence of a possible French landing in the area. This Martello was one of four built on Bere Island, but on Ardach and Cloughland Martello Towers survive. The two lost Towers were demolished, Lonehort Martello was later covered by the new Lonehort Battery and the Rerrin Martello was built over by Rerrin Village. was designate as Tower Number 4 on Bere Island.
