Ardagh Martello Tower was completed in 1805 as a defence of a possible French landing in the area.  This Martello was one of four built on Bere Island, but on Ardach and Cloughland Martello Towers survive.  The two lost Towers were demolished, Lonehort Martello was later covered by the new Lonehort Battery and the Rerrin Martello was built over by Rerrin Village. was designate as Tower Number 4 on Bere Island.  Ardagh Martello Tower was completed in 1805 as a defence of a possible French landing in the area.  This Martello was one of four built on Bere Island, but only Ardagh and Cloonaghlin Martello Towers survive.  The two lost Towers were demolished, Lonehort Martello (Tower 1) was later covered by the new Lonehort Battery and the Rerrin Martello (Tower 2) was built over by Rerrin Village.

Ardagh Martello Tower had some barracks built adjacent to it, indicating that this was an important location with possibly more troops than other Martello Towers.  The adjacent battery will have contributed to this importance.

A smooth bore battery with four or more guns was built about three hundred meters to the North East of the Martello Tower.
