Derrycreeveen Battery and Reenduff Batteries were both built at the same time between 1898 and 1903.  The Battery was sited to interdict any attacking vessels entering the Berehaven Fleet Anchorage through the western passage.

The Derrycreeveen Battery mounted two 6-inch QF guns with a central command position.  The magazines were underground between the two gun pits.  A pillbox was built to the rear of the battery, probably about 1914.  A small dam was established on the water course to the rear of the battery to supply water to the personnel of the two batteries.
