Beaufort Martello Tower, also called Fort Beaufort, is located in the city of Beaufort West some one hundred Kilometres from the sea.
In 1822 a blockhouse was built here in this area and named it after the Governor of Cape Colony, the Duke of Beaufort. Beaufort Martello Tower also known as Fort Beaufort was built between 1839 and 1846 to defend that area around Beaufort (KwaMaquoma).
The Beaufort Martello Tower is of standard design with a single 24-pdr SB gun mounted on the roof. The entrance is on the first floor and accessed by ladder.
The Beaufort Martello Tower was decommissioned in 1879.
Although some of the Canadian Martello Towers are far from the open sea, they tend to be near to the St Lawrence River. The Beaufort Martello Tower was a long way from the sea or any major water feature.
