Fort Thornton was originally built in 1815 as Fort Cockburn which included a defensible blockhouse and coastal defence battery with seven 24-pdr SB guns.
It was renamed Fort Thornton in 1880 when rebuilt. Initially armed with:
- One 7-inch 6.5 ton RML gun
- One 64-pdr 64cwt RML gun
- Two 64-pdr 64cwt guns
In 1889 Fort Thornton was approved to mount
- One 6-inch BL Mark VI
- Three 64-pdr RML Mark III
- One machine gun
