Algoa Bay Battery was built in the Humewood area of Port Elizabeth. Built between 1939 and April 1940 it was much like the Emergency Batteries in the United Kingdom. The Battery mounted two 6-inch BL Q.F. guns with steel covers. Prior to the building of this battery there had been a Fort Goscom here, two 6-inch Mark XIX gun mounted on wooden platforms as a stop gap measure.
