Fort Clonque was an irregular shaped fort built on a small islet in the Swinge. It is connected to the mainland by a 200 metre causeway. It is basically a ‘U’ shaped structure with Battery No.1 on the right hand side. The barracks are at the base of the ‘U’ with a flank battery facing towards the shore. Battery No.2 and Battery No.3 lie along a rocky outcrop.
Completed in 1859 the Fort was built to accommodate fifty nine soldiers. There was a total of nine guns, Battery I with five guns, Battery 2 with two guns, Battery 3 with one gun and the Flank Battery with one gun. The wall and pathway between Battery 2 and Battery 3 has now been washed away.
