The Royal Commission Appointed to Enquire into the Defence of British Possessions and Commerce Abroad 1879 to 1883 under the Earl of Carnarvon, designated Adelaide as a Defended Commercial Port. Two significant fortifications were built to protect the Harbour:
- Fort Glanville, built 1878 to 1882
- Fort Largs built 1882 to 1885
