Aberdeen was designated as a Class C Harbour with defences designed to withstand attack from unarmoured cruisers and block ships by the Home Ports Defence Committee, later the Home Defence Committee.

By 1914 Aberdeen had one active battery at Torry Point.  This battery was built between 1860 and 1861, originally with six guns.  The Battery had been upgraded to two 6-inch Mark VII guns by 1914.
