The 7-inch Rifled Breech Loading (RBL)  gun (110-pdr) was developed by W.G. Armstrong in 1861.  It was the first breech loading gun to be used for coastal defence, with a unique screw breech mechanism.

Just under a thousand of these guns were built, and many remained in service until the end of the century.  However, they quickly fell out of favour as a main line armament and by 1865 were being replaced by Rifled Muzzle Loading (RML) guns.
